Freedom for Whom

Justice or Just Us? The 4th of July bears no vestiges of freedom for me.

When My Granddad became a Black Panther

The July that Detroit Died

When the smoke cleared in July of '67, 43 people were dead, 5000 national guardsmen had been dispatched, and one of the most prosperous African American communities in the US became the precursor for the title "Murder Capital of the World." We who live in the shadows, we who are the discarded, we who are on the fringes of a new slavery, play in the rubble of our red brick promised land. The auto jobs fled. Motown fled. Whites fled to suburbia. We now allow others to laugh at our squalor, and we willing accept the notion that this our destiny.
In a single summer Detroit became terminal, and 40 years later the charred embers are still hot and something, something is brewing...

About Me:
A Detroit native, Carlos Redman has grown into one of the most prolific experimental trumpeters of our generation. Blending a sultry combination of Hip-hop, R&B, Rock, Jazz, and Classical genres, the young horn player continues to defy boundaries as he is often drawn in comparision to the great Donald Byrd.

At an early age encountering people such as Betty Carter, James Carter, and Donald Byrd his beginnings as a young performer in small venues and jazz festivals has blossomed into a career standing on stage with Jackie McClean, Sam Rivers, Fred Wesley, Aretha Franklin, Terrance Blanchard, Wendell Brunious, Hal Galper, Peter Martin, Clyde Kerr, and Aaliyah.

Traveling and encountering people from all over the world as a composer has grown him a reputation as a capable artist that fervently loves writing music that not only speaks for people in the mainstream, but ever mindful indigents that speak of the basic humanity of man.
