Depression And Recovery.

The National Mental Health Association developed this fact sheet as an introductory overview of depression. The fact sheet included, "{ PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PHOTOCOPY AND SHARE IT WITH OTHERS } ".

The article titled, " HOLIDAY DEPRESSION AND STRESS ", ( Information On Depression ), caught my attention. As a client of a local Behavioral Health Clinic and Community Health Center Patient, I had an interest in the findings. This article and one titled, " REAL MEN. REAL DEPRESSION., open my eyes to many of the symptoms of depression. My personal experiences with this illness kept me in everlasting ignorance, so I thought. However, now after utilizing treatment and remaining teachable, my perception of depression has changed. In the last paragraph of this discussion I would like to share the importance of why treatment is very important. Later I would like to discuss this article in relations to my personal experiences and how writing helped me develope the desire for change and recovery.

SEEK HELP FOR DEPRESSION.

If you are having symptoms of depression or know someone who is, seek help. There are several places in most communities where people with disorders can be diagnosed and treated. Help is available from family doctors, mental health specialists in mental health clinics or private clinics, and from other health professionals.

A variety of treatments, including medications and short-term psychotherapies (i,e,"talking" therapies), have proven effective for depressive disorders: more than 80 percent of people with a depressive illness improve with appropriate treatment. Not only can treatment lessen the severity of depression, but it may also reduce the duration of the episode and may help prevent additional bouts of depression.

Wow Kevin, you are so very brave, and unselfish to share this, and your personal experience with us!!! This speaks volumes about you and your character.

I am going to think on this some, before I make my remarks, but you know, we all battle depression from time-to-time, throughout our lives. At times, it CAN seem so overwhelming. But there is always hope, indeed.

I'll be back on this Kevin, and thanks again for this post! Wil

You are a brave soul. I never heard a man speak of depression. It has always been women. I have found out that a lot of people don't believe in depression they feel that the person is just lazy or someone is still in love with an old love or some other lame excuse. If you are not an alcoholic, or drug addict you are not a sick person. People need to see you in an ugly state in order for you to have problems; in order for you to be believed. I was depressed several years ago and I was stuck. I feel very good about my life today.
The beauty of it all is Life....

Life is good even in the worst of our daily obstacles, because we are alive. That statement coming from the spiritual realness of having hope and being connected to a " HIGHER POWER " can be the great motivator for some. What made this subject easy to discuss is the fact findings of my personal inventory. Combine the addiction issues with medical and mental health findings and what you get is some truth that some of us are sicker than others. Thanks for the compliment of being brave. The truth is, I'm just sick and tired of being a victim of my own ignorance and would rather soul search deep within me for the solutions with no fear.

Kevin, thank you so much for talking about DEPRESSION, which is a subject that I know isn't addressed enough in our communities and which is at the root of so many people's problems in this country. That is why I was so glad that Terrie Williams is publiciy addressing this issue in her new book, BLACK PAIN: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting. In her new book, Terrie has inspired the famous and the ordinary to speak out and mental health professionals to offer solutions. Check out her book trailer below!

Thanks for the comments on the discussion. I will look into this trailer and hope to purchase the book in the future. This will be an on going discussion for me because it represent the method of therapy via way of talking, writing, and learning about an illness that is treatable. Thanks again.
