Real Talk Poetry - "Left Holding The Baby"
“You’ve got your life ahead of you!”....
.. ..
He wasn’t thinking ....
And neither were you....
You should’ve halted the passion....
Put a hand to his chest....
You should’ve said no way honey....
Not until you strap on a vest....
Protect me....
Respect me....
After all I’m a Queen!....
Who are you?....
Why choose me to demean?....
I have adventures to go on....
I have goals to achieve....
You just left your deposit....
Not wanting to collect the interest it seems....
I’m left holding the baby....
My life changes right now....
I’m only sixteen....
It’s a serious decision… Wow!....
.. ..
I’ve got to think about my education ....
About responsibilities....
About getting a job....
I’m going to have to support a child as well as me....
That is… if I even go ahead with this pregnancy…....
.. ..
My head’s in a tizzy....
My stomachs all awhirl....
I wonder what it will be…....
A boy or a girl?....
Will it have my eyes, my nose, my hair curls?....
.. ..
Hold on, I’ve got to face the music....
Who can I tell?....
If I tell my dad he’ll blow his top ....
Scream and curse out loud, ....
Damn it all to hell !....
What did I teach you?....
About the birds and the bees?....
Didn’t I tell you how a man must respect and love you?....
Before in you he plants his weapon or seed?....
Didn’t I tell you I want the best for you?....
Didn’t I tell you I want you to succeed?....
You’re gonna have make a different game plan girl....
For a new path in life is about to unfurl.....

What if I tell my friend…....
She’ll probably ask....
Did it hurt?....
Was the first grind good?....
Would you prefer an educated country boy next?....
Or a grimey n***** from the hood? ....
No question about did we use contraception....
Nor a though about STI’s or STD’s ....
Nor even the flicker in thought....
Of the incurable HIV and AIDS I might have caught. ....
.. ..
I’ve gotta think about how my body will change....
How my tits will get so big....
Will I be able to cope?....
With the emotional, hormonal turmoil....
Of being a teen single parent in a rough neighbourhood?....
.. ..
So many questions ....
Just running through my mind....
I know my dad will help me....
Now mum is no longer around....
But with no siblings or support network....
To help me with all the other things....
The things that come with knowledge....
You know, those instinctual bonding things?....
It’s gonna get lonely....
Who would I be able to ring?....
.. ..
If only I wasn’t so eager to grow up....
To do what I see some other adults do....
I wouldn’t be the one left holding the baby....
After a drunken, one night I can’t remember fling.....
