congrats! congrats! congrats! (and you earned every ONE of those exclamation points): a book! I just finished at Mich last summer and am now on a short stint at Upenn but am back on the market this year. It is really good to hear from you and I would love to stay in touch. I will definitely put up another post after I finish reading the book! I am so excited to read it now...and please know that you are my new inspiration! Your success blesses those around you, Takeshia! :)

Hey, Are you the Takeshia who went to Michigan and studied with Catherine Squires? If so, I was in her Public Sphere theory class with you. I don't know if you remember me (Ellen Scott) but if so, it would be great to catch up. Either way, congratulations on your book. It looks tremendous and I am having our library order it. No one writes about Soundies!! I wrote about them in my work too.

Hey TaKeshia,
Thanks for the add. Nothing wrong with wanting to do it all. The problems arise when we all sit around and do nothing! Best wishes my friend. TTYL...

I have never heard the phrase, "studying African-American womanhood" before, but it sounds so sweet to me.

Profile Information

Relationship Status:
Single
About Me:
I graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana in communications. I have been writing and studying African-American womanhood, television and film with an emphasis on music video and history for nearly ten years as both editor of the Xavier Herald and later as a graduate student. Currently, I am both writing fiction under a pen name as well as preparing myself for an active life as an independent scholar. I immensely enjoy speaking on and discussing my areas of interest in popular culture (particularly music and film) and its relationship to black women. Right now, my dream is to either pursue a project about black female spoken word artists, Minnie Riperton or contemporary artists Rebekah Jordan and Imani Coppola.

The Man Who Made You Put Away Your Pen

'Mad Scientists,' Building The Future For 50 Years

If you've used a GPS system — or if you happen to be using the Internet to read this — you can thank DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. For 50 years, the smallish, somewhat secretive division of the Pentagon has been mostly off-limits to reporters. Now author Michael Belfiore has profiled the agency in a new book.

Arlington Ladies Pay Tribute To Fallen Soldiers

The Arlington Ladies believe that no death should go unmourned. How do they make sure that happens? The group of women attend people's funerals, even though they don't know them. NPR's Petra Mayer caught up with a few of the ladies at Arlington National Cemetery during this week's Veterans Day celebrations.

Television Writer David Lloyd Dies At 75

One of television's most successful comedy writers, David Lloyd, died this week. He was 75. Lloyd wrote for Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Dick Cavett. He penned episodes of Cheers, Taxi, Rhoda, The Bob Newhart Show, Wings and Frasier. But his most memorable work may have been on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. An episode he wrote called "Chuckles Bites the Dust" was cited by TV Guide as the funniest sitcom episode ever.

Terra Cotta Warriors March Through Washington

In 1974, a group of farmers digging a well in central China stumbled upon a buried figure. It turned out to be one of an estimated 7,000 life-sized terra cotta warriors in an underground tomb complex. The warriors and a host of other figures were created for China's first emperor, Qin Shihuangdi. Host Guy Raz drops by the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C., to see an exhibit of the figures.

In 'Prisoner,' Twisted Whimsy Flirts With New Fears

At the height of the Cold War, the television series The Prisoner was so subversive and enigmatic, it lasted just 17 episodes. There's finally a remake, but if you're expecting a faithful re-creation of the British series, actor Jim Caviezel says you'll be disappointed.
